The most impressive aspect at least for me of this superlative novel was the sense of a vulnerable human caught between the ruthless machinations of his employers and their opponents The central character is certainly resourceful but no superman He makes mistakes and the sense of his attempts to escape both from those and from the near impossible situations that the careless handling by his bosses places him in pervades the story in a way that feels thoroughly authentic This is no assemblage of cliches this is carefully researched thoroughly crafted sensitive fiction that easily matches or beats the best of its genre
