Oh my godWowThose are the first phrases that spring to mind when I think about this bookAnders Breivik who I will call AB from now on is one of those uniue criminals that none of us will ever forgetI was worried going in that as Asne Seierstad is Norwegian herself she d let herself get too emotional when telling this story But no She handled this with the cool detachment of all her booksSeierstad takes us right back to the start Who is AB Where did he come from What made him do the unthinkable unimaginable things he did And how was he allowed to For a while I started to get the impression Seierstad was trying to tell us that AB had killed 77 people because his parents didn t love him properlyThankfully after the first section Seierstad tells us about the victims mainly from Utoya She does this in such a way that as you get closer to what you know is coming you feel yourself praying Not this one Not this one Please not this one Honestly this book will make you feel I swear I almost vomited when I read that when people on Utoya had rung emergency services to tell them they were being shot at the response they got was No You re confused There s been a BOMB in OSLO Stop wasting our time before being cut off Which you uickly learn is only the first in a long list of failings from that horrible dayTrust me you will have to stop several times during the final 100 200 pages because you will fell yourself being reduced to tears A mother and father find themselves in a hospital chapel talking to the vicar about their son When they mention his name the vicar says Simon The one who saved all the others Seierstad has managed to give a voice and a legacy to those who were murdered and explains without excusing what AB did and what may have led him to form all his opinionsBrilliant book Highly recommend

I cannot recommend this book any than I already haveThis book has done the rounds in my family and everyone has had the same reaction wowSeierstad is a talented writer and her ability to tell the story through individual narratives which contribute to the description of the events surrounding the massacre is such a clever device for setting up a thrilling account of not only the perpetrator but many of the individuals affected The amount of research that has gone into this book is genuinely astounding and Seieserstad has done superbly in re telling the fateful events which ensuedI would say this is a must read book a great page turner which delves into the psyche of the criminal mind certainly not for the fainthearted though
