I bought this book hoping to learn something of the history of Heligoland of which I knew little or nothing It seemed like an interesting and informative read at first with just a few niggling details over whose accuracy I had doubts about However as I didn t have extensive knowledge over these points myself I gave the author the benefit of the doubt after all he must have looked into these points making him a greater authority than I But once World War 1 something I do know uite a bit about appeared in the story about half way into the book it became crystal clear that I had credited the author with far too much diligence as a historical researcherI initially passed over the author s assertion that Admiral Henry Oliver was an Admiral of the Fleet in 1914 assuming that as the scene described included two actual Admirals of the Fleet that it was just a mistake and that it was Fisher and Wilson that the author had meant Then the author started giving details about goings on in the 1914 period Admiralty that were not the uite story I knew which started me thinking Oh boySure enough when the author gave to most inaccurate account of the 1st Battle of Heligoland Bight that I had ever read which ended with a fantasy force of German battle cruisers pursuing fleeing British cruisers from the Bight I realised that I was reading a true turkey The author uickly further cemented his credentials as a writer of fiction by claiming that at the Battle of Dogger bank the Lion was possibly disabled by fire from the huge battleship Helgoland As neither the Helgoland nor any other battleship was present at that particular fight it became uite clear that the author was simply making it up as he went along with little or no concern for historical accuracy When I got as far as the point where the author insisted that instead of building battleships that millions had been pointlessly suandered in widening the Kiel Canal which was one of Germanys most important strategic assets and whose existence played a key part in the Royal Navy s decision not to try force their way into the Baltic and end the war sooner I decided to give up on this book as a resource to further my knowledge
