This is a really good mix of music history social and political history and detailed cultural context There is content to commend it in all of those areas I ve read a fair few soul history and music biographies from this period and this book is different from any of those The focus is on a single year and a defined geography and the book tries to cover everything that goes on within those boundaries It is an innovative approach and a great read It gives a very different picture to what is commonly available in music booksOf course some things are covered in depth than others and that might be seen as a weakness as another review hints at I didn t notice it when reading it flowed well and I felt I d got a real feel for the times people and places that were covered Some of the content was sufficiently new or interesting shocking that it had me digging around online to find out details That is a compliment not a criticismA real page turned and some great prose southern soul citadels is great frost like crystal meths I am less sure aboutHighly recommended
